Notes on the Book of Judges:
Overview on the book of Judges
The Historical Context
300 year period between Conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua and move toward Kingship under Judge Samuel anointing King Saul. Between 1350 and 1050 BC
Promised Land largely conquered but Israel did not completely fulfil God’s command to rout all the foreign nations from the land, therefore God used these foreign tribes to test Israel through discipline of oppression / subjection (2:1-3, 20-23; 3:1-4).
“In those days Israel had no king, everyone did what was right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25) (Last verse of the book)
The Judges Cycle:
This continual cycle (12x) of decline – oppression – repentance – rescue. It also becomes quicker and uglier with each cycle. Its more of a spiral downward than a cycle.
